As we all know, fans come in two types: DC fans and AC fans. In this issue, let’s take a closer look at DC fans.
What is a DC cooling fan?
DC cooling fans are an important heat-dissipation device widely used in modern industrial machinery. They feature excellent cooling performance, long service life, simple structure, and easy installation, making them commonly employed for mechanical heat dissipation.
What is the working principle of a DC cooling fan?
A DC cooling fan is primarily composed of a rotor, stator, fan blades, and other auxiliary components. The control circuit typically incorporates numerous semiconductor devices, which nowadays are often integrated into one or more ICs. Many manufacturers have specially designed and produced a wide variety of motor-control IC models to meet the needs of fan circuit designers and users. Although different IC models feature varying control circuits, their primary objective remains the same: to more effectively control and maintain the coil’s efficient performance as well as meet the specific requirements of fan-related characteristics. By means of direct current voltage and electromagnetic induction, electrical energy is converted into mechanical energy, thereby driving the fan blades to rotate. Through the continuous switching between coils and ICs, the magnetic ring is induced to rotate the fan blades.
Primarily used for ventilation and heat dissipation in computer peripherals, household appliances, audio amplification systems, car refrigerators, in-vehicle equipment, instruments and meters, and mechanical equipment.
Advantages of DC cooling fans:
1. The DC cooling fan features a state-of-the-art design and boasts characteristics such as high airflow, low noise, long service life, and corrosion resistance.
2. It uses high-quality bearings, silicon steel sheets, and enameled wire, offering greater reliability.
Things to consider when selecting a DC cooling fan include:
1. The rotational speed of the DC cooling fan:
Just like power, the rotational speed of a DC cooling fan is also better when higher—because the higher the speed, the stronger the airflow and the more effective the cooling performance. However, high rotational speeds can lead to increased vibration and noise, and the higher the speed, the greater the impact on the fan’s service life.
2. Material of the DC cooling fan:
Today, the materials commonly used in the market are aluminum and plastic. Aluminum fans are typically used in AC fans, which have lower cooling performance and smaller airflow. DC cooling fans, on the other hand, generally use plastic as their material.
3. Power of the DC cooling fan:
The higher the wattage of a light bulb, the brighter it shines; similarly, the higher the wattage of a speaker, the louder it sounds. Likewise, the greater the wattage of a DC cooling fan, the stronger its airflow will be. With stronger airflow, the cooling performance becomes even better. Therefore, we should comprehensively compare and select DC cooling fans by taking into account both their materials and operating principles.
4. Performance of DC cooling fans:
The DC cooling fan must be able to provide sufficient airflow (i.e., rotational speed) to expel hot air from the cooling system under high-temperature conditions. However, when the temperature of the hot air is relatively low or the volume of hot air flow is small, the fan will operate in reverse.
In the process of using DC cooling fans, we can observe that they are powered by direct current. A DC motor consists of two main components: the stator and the rotor. The stator is equipped with magnetic poles—either in the form of windings or permanent magnets—while the rotor contains windings as well. Once current is applied, a magnetic field (magnetic poles) is generated on the rotor as well. Thus, we can see that there is an angle between the magnetic poles of the stator and the rotor, and the motor operates by the mutual attraction between the N-poles and S-poles of the stator and rotor magnetic fields.

Advantages and Applications of Oil-Bearing DC Fans

The pivot joint is fixed at the position of the motor stator base, ensuring an appropriate gap between the rotor and the stator. Of course, there must also be a clearance between the shaft core and the bearings to prevent the shaft core from becoming locked and thus unable to function. The stator structure of the motor—hereafter referred to as the "stator"—is designed in such a way that, once power is supplied, an induced magnetic field will be generated between the rotor and the stator. The control circuit then drives the electric fan motor into operation. Therefore, in the conventional fan motor design, as long as the fan rotor, the motor stator, and the drive circuit work together via the pivot joint between the shaft core and the bearings and through magnetic field induction, the motor can operate effectively.
