A brief discussion on how to distinguish between the noise and unusual sounds of a cooling fan.

Common methods for detecting abnormal sounds typically involve listening closely with the ear, which introduces a significant degree of subjectivity, making it difficult to identify such sounds accurately and prone to disputes. If a large number of fans are in use, spectral analysis equipment can be employed to examine the frequency spectrum and energy distribution of the noise, thereby enabling the identification of unusual sounds.

Of course, for some users who prioritize only airflow and static pressure, the higher the rotational speed, the better—and noise levels can be somewhat relaxed. However, from a system-performance perspective, we’ve always recommended choosing a solution that meets cooling requirements while keeping noise levels as low as possible—ideally, as low as possible.

Noise: Noise is generated because the blades periodically experience pulsating forces caused by the non-uniform airflow at the outlet. On the other hand, due to the uneven distribution of pressure both on the blades themselves and across their surfaces, the rotation of the blades disturbs the surrounding air and adjacent components, contributing to rotational noise. Additionally, as gas flows past the blades, it creates boundary layers, vortices, and vortex shedding, leading to fluctuations in the pressure distribution on the blade surfaces and thus generating vortex noise. For fans within the same series, those with higher airflow and higher static pressure tend to produce greater noise. Therefore, it is important to select fan types appropriately—excessively large margins not only waste energy but also increase noise levels. For fans of the same model, preference should be given to those operating at lower speeds whenever possible. When comparing different fan models, priority should be given to selecting those with lower noise levels rather than simply focusing on rotational speed.

Unusual Noise: The noise sounds like nothing more than a simple breeze. Such noise is actually a sound wave possessing all the characteristics of sound waves. However, unusual noise is different. When the fan is running, if, in addition to the sound of the airflow, other sounds are also present—meaning two or more distinct sounds are being emitted—this indicates that the fan is producing unusual noise. Unusual noise may arise from foreign objects or deformation inside the bearing, improper assembly causing collisions, or uneven winding of the motor windings leading to loose connections. Fans exhibiting such unusual noise should be considered obsolete and phased out.

Advantages and Applications of Oil-Bearing DC Fans

The pivot joint is fixed at the position of the motor stator base, ensuring an appropriate gap between the rotor and the stator. Of course, there must also be a clearance between the shaft core and the bearings to prevent the shaft core from becoming locked and thus unable to function. The stator structure of the motor—hereafter referred to as the "stator"—is designed in such a way that, once power is supplied, an induced magnetic field will be generated between the rotor and the stator. The control circuit then drives the electric fan motor into operation. Therefore, in the conventional fan motor design, as long as the fan rotor, the motor stator, and the drive circuit work together via the pivot joint between the shaft core and the bearings and through magnetic field induction, the motor can operate effectively.
