As the car is driving, the engine, operating under high-temperature conditions, must be adequately cooled to maintain its temperature within an optimal range, thereby ensuring good engine performance, durability, and compliance with exhaust emission standards. The engine cooling system plays a crucial role in this process. It primarily consists of components such as the cooling fan, radiator, and thermostat.
(1) The radiator is a component of the automobile cooling system. In an engine’s liquid-cooling system, the radiator consists of three main parts: the inlet chamber, the outlet chamber, and the core assembly, which includes the main fins and the radiator core itself. Coolant flows through the radiator core, while air passes over the exterior of the core. As the hot coolant releases heat to the air, it cools down; conversely, the cold air warms up as it absorbs the heat released by the coolant. Thus, the radiator functions as a heat exchanger.
(2) The radiator serves both as a water reservoir and as a heat exchanger. An air-steam valve is installed on the radiator cap, and there is a common vent hole that communicates with the atmosphere. When the water temperature rises, the coolant in the radiator expands, causing the vapor pressure to increase and the steam valve to close. As the water temperature drops, the pressure decreases, and the air valve opens, allowing external air to enter the radiator through this common vent hole, thereby maintaining a constant pressure inside the radiator.
(3) The radiator is a key component of the cooling system, designed to protect the engine from damage caused by overheating. The radiator works by using cold air to reduce the temperature of the coolant flowing from the engine into the radiator. The radiator consists of two main components: radiator fins made up of numerous small, flat tubes, and an expansion tank (located at the top, bottom, or sides of the radiator fins).

To prevent overheating and ensure effective cooling, the components surrounding the combustion chamber—such as cylinder liners, cylinder heads, and valves—must be adequately cooled. The automotive cooling system typically consists of a radiator, thermostat, water pump, coolant passages in the engine block, coolant passages in the cylinder head, and a fan. The radiator is responsible for cooling the circulating coolant; its water pipes and fins are often made of aluminum. The aluminum water pipes are designed with a flattened profile, while the fins feature a corrugated structure to maximize heat dissipation performance. When installed, the radiator’s orientation should be perpendicular to the direction of airflow, minimizing air resistance as much as possible while maximizing cooling efficiency.
