Brushless DC motor
Advantages
a) Electronic commutation replaces traditional mechanical commutation, offering reliable performance, zero wear, and a low failure rate. Its lifespan is approximately six times longer than that of brushed motors, making it the future direction of motor development.
b) It is a static motor with a small no-load current;
c) High efficiency;
d) Small in size.
Disadvantages
a) At low speeds, there is slight vibration during startup; however, as the speed increases and the commutation frequency rises, the vibration becomes imperceptible.
b) High price and high controller requirements;
c) Resonance is easily triggered because every object has its own natural vibration frequency. If the vibration frequency of the brushless motor happens to match or closely resemble that of the frame or plastic components, resonance is likely to occur. However, this resonance can be minimized by making appropriate adjustments. Therefore, it’s perfectly normal for electric vehicles driven by brushless motors to sometimes emit a humming sound.
DC Brush Motor
Advantages:
a) The gear changes are smooth, with virtually no vibration felt;
b) Low temperature rise and good reliability;
c) The price is low, so it’s chosen by more manufacturers. Disadvantages:
a) Carbon brushes are prone to wear, their replacement is relatively cumbersome, and their service life is short.
b) The operating current is high, making it easy for the motor’s magnetic steel to demagnetize, thereby reducing the motor’s lifespan.
In other words, the advantage of DC inverter motor fans lies in their low power consumption, small size, high efficiency, and relatively low noise levels.
Currently, the power of conventional motors is 1.5 to 3 times that of DC brushless motors (depending on the level of motor technology). The noise level of these fans is ten to over ten decibels higher, yet their price ranges from two to more than ten times higher—meaning that price remains the primary barrier hindering widespread consumer adoption.
