As anyone in the fan industry knows, fans are common industrial machines. When using axial-flow fans, the impeller will experience wear after a period of use. The degree of wear on axial-flow fan blades is influenced by factors such as the composition of the gas, particle size, concentration, shape, impact velocity, impact angle, chemical composition, performance, temperature, and humidity. Non-uniform airflow can accelerate blade wear. To prevent blade wear, it’s essential to reduce the amount of dust and corrosive gases entering the fan and to modify the fan’s structural design accordingly. Second, efforts should be made to ensure that localized wear becomes more evenly distributed—this requires enhancing the wear resistance of the impeller. So how can we effectively prevent impeller wear? Depending on the specific type of wear, preventive measures can be categorized as follows:
1. Treat the blade surface
The blade surface can be treated by carburizing, plasma cladding, hardmetal spraying, or bonding ceramic tiles. A common advantage of these methods is that they increase the hardness of the blade surface, thereby enhancing its wear resistance to a certain extent. However, each method has its own drawbacks. Carburizing is a technically challenging process; during actual carburization, the location and thickness of the carburized layer depend on the blade’s thickness, wear condition, and the specific carburizing process used. Plasma cladding often results in significant blade deformation, and repeated welding can lead to cracks on the blade surface, increasing the risk of accidents. When hardmetal spraying is employed, it is difficult to achieve an optimal coating thickness. Bonding ceramic tiles offers relatively good performance, but the cost is high.
2. Apply a wear-resistant coating to the surface.
This method is simple to apply and low in cost, but the coating wears out quickly—lasting only about 3 to 5 months per use.
3. Improve blade structure
There are several methods to reduce impeller wear to a certain extent, including machining the blade working surface into a serrated shape, converting hollow blades into solid blades, and welding wear-resistant blocks onto the blades.
4. Front-mounted anti-abrasion blade grid
After installing wear-resistant blade fences at areas prone to abrasion, particle flow toward the back disk and blade roots can be effectively blocked, transforming concentrated wear into uniform wear. This significantly enhances the wear resistance of the impeller and extends the service life of the fan.
5. Improve aerodynamic design
Select the shape of the fan inlet reasonably. During design, ensure that the relative velocity at the small inlet of the impeller is optimized, and minimize the fan’s rotational speed as much as possible. Choose an appropriate impeller passage geometry such that the radius of curvature of the blade’s profile gradually increases from the inlet to the outlet. This approach can reduce the likelihood of solid particles colliding with the blades.
