The core of fan technology lies in bearing technology. Bearings also represent the largest cost component in a fan. There are many types of fan bearings; here we’ll introduce several of the most common ones:
1. Single-ball bearing brushless fan
The single-ball bearing represents an improvement over the traditional oil-seal bearing. In this design, the rotor and stator are lubricated by balls, complemented by a supply of lubricating oil. It addresses the shortcomings of oil-seal bearings—such as their short service life and unstable operation—while keeping the cost increase extremely limited. The single-ball bearing combines the advantages of both oil-seal bearings and double-ball bearings. Its service life has been extended to 40,000 hours. Although the addition of balls slightly increases operational noise, the noise level still remains lower than that of a double-ball bearing.
II. Laifu Bearing Brushless Fan
As an improvement over traditional oil-sealed bearings, Lai Fu bearings are made from wear-resistant materials and feature high-oil-content hollow bearings, which significantly reduce friction between the bearing and the shaft core. Additionally, Lai Fu bearings incorporate a shaft core equipped with reverse spiral grooves and oil-retaining grooves. During fan operation, the lubricating oil flows in a reverse circulation pattern, effectively preventing oil leakage and thereby extending the bearing’s service life. By adopting these structural features and components, Lai Fu bearing fans achieve a substantial enhancement in oil retention and oil-holding capacity, while also reducing noise levels.
3. Brushless fan with dual ball bearings
Double-ball bearings are relatively high-end bearings. Inside the bearing, several tiny steel balls are arranged around the shaft axis; as the fan blades or shaft rotate, these steel balls rotate along with them. Because they are all spherical, friction is minimal, and there’s no risk of oil leakage. The advantages of double-ball fans include a longer service life—approximately 40,000 to 55,000 hours—and excellent resistance to aging, making them well-suited for fans operating at higher speeds. However, the downside of double-ball bearings is their high manufacturing cost, and at the same rotational speed, they tend to generate the highest noise levels (since the number of friction points in ball bearings is doubled).
4. Hydraulic Bearing Brushless Fan
Hydraulic bearings are a technology first developed by AVC. Similarly, they represent an improvement over oil-sealed bearings. Hydraulic bearings feature a larger oil-storage capacity than oil-sealed bearings and incorporate a unique recirculating oil supply circuit. As a result, hydraulic-bearing fans operate at significantly lower noise levels and boast an exceptionally long service life—up to 40,000 hours. However, not all AVC coolers are equipped with hydraulic-bearing fans.
5. Nano-bearing brushless fan
Traditional oil-sealed bearing fans suffer from significant wear during operation and exhibit lower reliability over extended periods of use. Nano-bearings effectively address this issue: the ceramic bearing technology involves a thorough fusion of nanoscale polymer materials with special additives, which are then processed using die-casting and sintering techniques. These bearings contain ceramic powder and boast characteristics such as robustness, smoothness, and exceptional wear resistance. Nano-ceramic bearings (NCBs) possess outstanding high-temperature resistance and are resistant to volatilization, greatly extending the service life of the fan. The properties of nano-bearings closely resemble those of ceramics—indeed, the more they are used, the smoother they become. According to testing, fans equipped with nano-ceramic bearings (NCBs) have an average service life exceeding 150,000 hours.
