Before we know it, we’ve already entered the May Day holiday. In just these few short days, the weather has undergone a significant transformation. In Beijing these past few days, the highest temperature has climbed to 36℃. I’m sure friends across most regions of China have already started to feel the arrival of summer. Besides taking off our jackets and turning on the air conditioning, the rising temperatures have another impact on us—namely, the issue of computer cooling.
The most common computer cooling method we encounter is still traditional air cooling. The principle behind it is simple: a fan draws in cool ambient air and directs it onto heat sink fins that are closely attached to the CPU surface, thereby carrying away the heat generated by the CPU during operation. More advanced variants, such as side-blowing air coolers and bottom-mounted heat-pipe air coolers, use the evaporation and condensation of liquid inside heat pipes to transfer heat from the CPU surface even more efficiently, with the fan then removing this heat from the system.
Even with liquid-cooling radiators that have higher maximum cooling capacities, fans remain an indispensable component. As room temperature rises and the cold air used for cooling becomes less chilly, more air will be required to dissipate the same amount of heat, causing the fan speed to increase accordingly. Naturally, as the fan spins faster, the noise level will also rise.
Ever since I started coming to work last week, the noise from next to me has been getting louder and louder. The ITX case, which used to seem small and stylish, has now become a sweltering coffin for my hardware. The ultra-high-speed fans buzzing away nearby are seriously disrupting my productivity.
Today, I’d like to share with you several ways to address fan noise.
1. Replace the fan. Generally, fans for heat sinks are relatively inexpensive. If you feel that the current cooling performance is acceptable and you don’t need to add more heat pipes—just want to reduce fan noise—then you can consider replacing the fan with a higher-end model. For example, the well-known “Cat Fan.” The Owl Fan is renowned for being lamp-free, delivering high airflow, and producing low noise. Aside from its high price, it has virtually no drawbacks. Using an Owl Fan can help reduce noise to some extent.
2. Upgrade the cooling system. If your current cooler needs to run at high speed to meet your cooling demands, a more powerful cooler can operate at lower speeds, naturally reducing noise levels. For example, switching from a downward-blowing cooler to a side-blowing one, upgrading from a side-blowing cooler to liquid cooling, or replacing a 120mm liquid cooler with a 360mm liquid cooler—these are all effective upgrades.
3. Consider upgrading your computer case. To meet the demand for quiet operation, some cases on the market are lined with sound-absorbing cotton, and they also employ silent fans and sufficiently thick case walls to effectively isolate noise. For example, the X-MAX Black Hole 7 case that the author uses at home is an excellent, affordable, and quiet case.
4. Get rid of the fans. In fact, using fans isn't the only way to achieve effective cooling. Some enthusiasts who love pushing performance to the limit even remove all the fans from their cases and switch to passive cooling instead. Alternatively, they might fill sealed cases with an oil that has a high specific heat capacity yet is non-conductive, thereby achieving cooling.
