DC fans are well-known, widely used thermal management devices that can be employed individually, in series, or in parallel to provide forced-air convection cooling. It is precisely because of their versatility and relatively simple operation that DC fans have remained a reliable choice for temperature control in end-use applications over the years.
The typical voltage for standard cooling fans is 12V. However, some customers’ products—such as temperature-controlled cooling fans—set the cooling fan voltage even lower at low temperatures. Under these lower-voltage conditions, the cooling fan’s rotational speed slows down and becomes quieter. To accommodate three different airflow levels, some customers have designed three distinct voltages below 12V. This way, cooling fans that operate continuously within their rated voltage range without ever reaching their maximum capacity won’t get damaged over time.
The primary factors determining the speed of a cooling fan are the fan’s design and components, the friction in the bearings, and the aerodynamic drag caused by the blade angle. If the cooling fan lacks sufficient air pressure, this will also affect its speed.

A DC cooling fan is a type of heat dissipation device that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy through direct current voltage and electromagnetic induction, thereby driving the fan blades to rotate. Thanks to its numerous advantages—such as excellent cooling performance, high rotational speed, and long service life—DC cooling fans are widely used. But have you ever taken the time to understand how a DC cooling fan actually works? Let’s now have our editor briefly explain it to you.
