Common faults of cooling fans include:
1. When the cooling fan is running, you sometimes hear a “click-clack” clicking sound, while at other times there’s none at all. It turns out that the cooling fan is densely packed with messy data cables and power cords; occasionally, the cable ends come into contact with the fan blades, causing an unusual noise whenever the cooling fan is spinning.
Solution: Secure the data and power cables inside the fan using rubber bands, adhesive tape, or similar materials, ensuring they do not pass over the top of the cooling fan.
 
2. Another failure symptom of the cooling fan is that, although it initially functioned normally, recently it has suddenly started to shift from its fixed position. Upon investigation, it was found that the retaining clips securing the heatsink had failed. The resonance caused by the fan’s rotation led to the fan’s displacement.
Solution: Replace the fastener with a new one.
 
3. When the cooling fan is in use, it suddenly starts emitting a distinctive, loud noise—so loud, in fact, that it even drowns out the sound of the power supply inside the case. This is because excessive dust has accumulated on the surface of the cooling fan and in the gaps of the heatsink. Moreover, the motor’s lubricant has completely dried up, causing a humming-like roar reminiscent of a motor.
Solution: First, we can separate the cooling fan from the heatsink. The heatsink itself can be cleaned directly with tap water. Start by wiping the cooling fan with a soft paper; for hard-to-reach crevices, you can use a medical swab. Next, remove the plastic sticker covering the fan’s motor and apply one to two drops of ordinary sewing machine oil into the motor mechanism.
 
4. Some cooling fans, if used for less than a week, may exhibit excessive noise and sluggish rotation. Immediately after startup, the fan’s rotational speed tends to be slower and accompanied by louder noise; however, after a short period, the fan returns to normal operation. The typical cause of these issues is that the room temperature where the cooling fan is located is relatively low, leading to the failure of the lubricant in the rotating bearings.
Solution: Add antifreeze lubricant to the cooling fan, pay attention to the ambient temperature, and ensure regular maintenance.
 
There are many reasons that can cause a cooling fan to malfunction. Therefore, it’s important to perform regular maintenance and care when using it, so as to extend its service life.
