First, let’s take a look at the principle behind temperature-controlled cooling fans: As the heat around the fan increases, the fan’s rotational speed rises accordingly, which in turn boosts airflow (increasing the volume of exhaust air). The fan uses a thermistor to detect temperature; a sensor mounted on the fan hub can measure the temperature of the air passing through the fan. In this configuration, it’s crucial to install the fan correctly. Once the fan is properly installed, the thermistor sensor can detect temperature changes via a special connecting cable.
The fan’s operation adjusts according to the heat conditions: when running at a slower speed, the fan produces less noise and consumes less energy. In most design specifications, after the fan has been running at higher speeds for several hours, the air temperature typically drops below the maximum design temperature. Under normal circumstances, a cooling fan operating at low speed can adequately perform its intended function.
When selecting and installing cooling fans, we should also take several factors into consideration:
First, the temperature-controlled cooling fan must be able to provide sufficient airflow (i.e., rotational speed) to expel hot air from the cooling system under high-temperature conditions. When the temperature of the hot air is relatively low or the volume of hot air flow is small, the fan will operate in reverse.
Second, when installing the sensor, it’s crucial to select the correct position carefully and ensure that it can be securely placed in an appropriate location. Ideally, the sensor should be able to clamp directly onto the surface that needs to be cooled. During operation, the temperature-controlled fan—when the heating temperature is high—will respond with a faster speed; at lower temperatures, the fan will run at a slower speed. Between these higher and lower temperature ranges, the fan speed will remain virtually unchanged. As the temperature changes slowly, the fan speed will also change gradually, avoiding sudden fluctuations in speed and noise. The response time depends on the length of the sensor as well as its thermal sensitivity.
