First, remove the dust.
1. We need you to remove the power supply (simply unscrew the four screws on the back of the main unit that connect to the power box, and you’ll be able to take out the power box). Also, please prepare a medium-hard brush, an air pump, or a hair dryer. To prevent static electricity from your hands from damaging the power supply, we recommend briefly touching a large metal object, such as a metal railing.
2. We’ll need to hold a hairdryer in one hand and direct it toward the fan, while using a brush with the other hand to gently remove dust. It’s recommended that everyone wear a mask—there’ll be quite a bit of dust. If the fan blades can be removed, it’s best to give them a thorough rinse with clean water first.
The host’s cleaning isn’t limited to just the power supply fan—more importantly, the processor and graphics card fans also need to be cleaned.
Second, lubricate the fan. If the fan lacks lubricant or if the lubricant is excessively thick, it will similarly have a significant impact on the fan, causing it to make loud noises.
Adding lubricant is highly effective in reducing fan noise. To begin, remove the fan. On the side of the fan that faces the heat sink, you’ll find a circular adhesive sticker centered on the fan’s shaft. Peel off this sticker, and you’ll see the fan shaft. If the area inside is relatively clean, simply add a single drop of light-weight lubricant—it should suffice. However, if you notice significant dirt or grime, you’ll need to disassemble the rotor for cleaning. You’ll find a retaining clip at the end of the shaft; carefully remove this clip, and you’ll be able to take out the rotor for thorough cleaning. For cleaning, you can use gasoline or anhydrous alcohol. After wiping everything clean, allow it to dry completely before adding lubricant and reassembling the rotor. Finally, reattach the adhesive sticker, and you can install the rotor back onto the heat sink.
Some fans allow you to remove the label on the fan and add oil directly, while others don’t—these require you to disassemble the blades and extract the bearings before adding oil. The oils used can be liquid, such as sewing machine oil, or other types, like grease, and sometimes they can even be mixed together. If possible, it’s best to purchase higher-quality oils for better performance.
Third, sometimes if the power supply screws are not tightened properly, resonance may occur, resulting in slight noise. It’s recommended to check whether the power supply is installed securely and appropriately.
Finally, let’s not forget to clean the dust off the power supply casing and the dust filters on the computer case. Just like cleaning the fans, use an air blower and a brush—blow gently while brushing—and if possible, remove the dust filters for thorough cleaning.
