Can a small fan also use a DC brushless motor?

The fans we use in our daily lives work by using a motor to rotate the fan blades, thereby influencing air movement. As for fan motors in general, brushless motors are the most commonly used. Since fans need to operate continuously for long periods, only brushless motors can meet this requirement—while brushed DC motors simply cannot. Consequently, brushless motors are the most widely adopted type of motor for fans.
However, for some small fans, miniature brushed DC motors can also perfectly meet application requirements. For example, handheld mini-fan motors and USB fan motors can both use brushed miniature DC motors. Brushed miniature DC motors are easy to speed-control, unlike brushless motors, which are comparatively more complex. Moreover, brushed miniature DC motors have low costs, and since the price of handheld mini-fans is not high either, brushed DC motors are widely used in handheld mini-fans and office USB fans.
While it’s true that brushless motors offer slightly better performance, due to cost considerations, very few people use brushless motors in small fans. This is because higher costs would lead to increased product prices. Moreover, for USB-powered small fans, the difference between using a brushed and a brushless motor isn’t really significant—essentially, the only notable distinction lies in service life. Brushed motors have shorter carbon-brush wear life compared to brushless motors. However, for micro- and mini-sized products, these differences can largely be disregarded.
For handheld mini fans or USB fans, brush-type motors are recommended. You can choose from the 020 micro DC motor, the 140 micro DC motor, or the 370 micro motor—these are all round-shaped motors that are compact in size and lightweight, making them highly suitable for small fan products. These models are also the most commonly used in the market. However, the 370 micro motor is slightly larger in size; it’s perfectly fine for USB fans, but for handheld mini fans, you’d be best off opting for either the 020 or 140 motor. Additionally, bladeless fans, which have become quite popular, can also use either the 020 or 370 micro motor—but of course, this applies only to smaller bladeless fan models. If you’re dealing with a larger fan, it’s better to consider brushless motors instead. Therefore, when selecting a motor for a small fan, you don’t necessarily have to stick exclusively to brushless motors; sometimes, brushed DC motors can also meet all your requirements quite effectively.
