1. Inverters have low costs and low capacity. The current rating for an inverter during continuous operation refers to the peak value of a square-wave current. Induction motors require sinusoidal currents, whereas DC motors need square-wave currents. The current rating for an inverter during continuous operation generally refers to the effective value of this sinusoidal waveform. To ensure that the inverter maintains its ability to precisely control the motor current, there should be a sufficient voltage difference between the inverter’s DC input voltage and the motor’s back EMF. Under these conditions, if we assume that the peak currents of both the DC motor and the induction motor are equal, the former’s power output will be 33% higher than the latter’s. In other words, the same rectifier/inverter can drive a brushless DC motor with 33% greater output power than an induction motor.
2. High Power Factor: The power factor of a DC motor is significantly higher than that of an induction motor, because the excitation magnetic field of a DC motor does not require reactive current from the power grid. A DC motor can operate at a power factor of 1, which is particularly advantageous for low-power motors. Compared to induction motors, DC motors not only exhibit higher efficiency and power factor at rated load but also demonstrate greater advantages when operating under light loads.
3. Low losses and high efficiency—eliminating the losses caused by the excitation current in induction motors, while the permanent-magnet DC motor operates in synchronous mode thanks to the use of permanent magnets for excitation. This also eliminates the frequency-dependent iron loss in the rotor core of induction motors. These two factors result in significantly higher operating efficiency for permanent-magnet DC motors compared to induction motors, with even more pronounced efficiency improvements in small-capacity motors.
4. The DC fan boasts excellent speed regulation performance and simple control. Not only is its speed control straightforward, but it also delivers superior speed regulation performance compared to the variable-frequency speed control of induction motors.
