Why do perfectly good fans make noise? Why do they sometimes malfunction? I wonder if any of you have ever been curious about this. Below, I’ll share with you an analysis of the possible causes behind these issues.

Dust Accumulation on Fans: As the cooling fan operates, the airflow it generates not only helps dissipate heat from the laptop but also traps dust particles from the air onto its surface and near the ventilation openings. This not only impairs the cooling performance but also increases the workload on the cooling fan. Moreover, it alters the airflow environment, leading to increased noise levels.
If this phenomenon is promptly cleaned of dust, it won't affect the components. However, if dust isn't removed in a timely manner, over time it can cause wear on the fan shaft, leading to "eccentricity" in the fan blades. This type of noise can only be resolved by replacing the cooling fan.

Normal wear and tear: The primary cause of loud noise is the “eccentricity” of the cooling fan blades. When the fan blades are perfectly balanced, with their center of gravity aligned precisely with the axis, they rotate smoothly and produce very little noise. However, as the fan is used daily, wear and tear gradually cause a slight deviation, resulting in the center of gravity no longer being aligned with the axis—thus creating “eccentricity.”

Once such a fan starts rotating, it functions like an oscillator (an oscillator is essentially an eccentric wheel attached to the motor shaft). As usage time increases, the fan bearings gradually wear out, causing vibrations to intensify and noise levels to rise.

Motor failure: The cooling fan is a wear-and-tear component. Once its motor reaches its designed service life, or if the motor becomes damp and experiences internal short circuits, overload, or power surges, it may lead to motor damage. This type of failure is normal and can be resolved by simply replacing the fan.
Usage recommendation: The cooling fan will naturally produce some airflow noise during operation. However, if you notice that the fan’s noise has significantly increased compared to when you first purchased the device, or if the noise differs markedly from its normal operating sound (e.g., if you hear scraping or clanging noises), it’s time to have the fan inspected or cleaned of dust.

Of course, there must also be a clearance between the shaft core and the bearings to prevent the shaft core from becoming locked and thus unable to function. The control circuit then drives the electric fan motor into operation.
