If a cooling fan has been in use for more than about three years, it will often suffer damage or have its cooling performance impaired due to dust accumulation. In such cases, we can replace the cooling fan with a new one to ensure the proper functioning of the appliance. So, how do we correctly replace the cooling fan? Here are a few key points summarized below:
1. Open the CPU cooler and check whether all the components are complete and whether their specifications match. Typically, a CPU cooler consists of several major parts: the fan, the base, clips, and thermal silicone.
2. First, insert the white clip into the base’s slot, then insert the black clip to complete the base installation.
3. Evenly apply thermal silicone grease to both the heatsink and the CPU, then insert the base into the motherboard slot and secure it in place.
4. Double-check the angle and position, and simulate the installation in advance. If it’s not suitable, make adjustments promptly.
5. Place the radiator into the base, and at the same time, use the clips on both sides of the radiator to secure it onto the clips on the base. Then, insert the power cable into the corresponding port on the motherboard. Once installation is complete, you can power on the system and start using it.
Determining the magnitude of the cooling fan’s rotational speed.
Cooling fans are typically divided into the following three categories:
1. Axial-flow: The direction of the airflow at the outlet is the same as the direction of the axis.
2. Centrifugal: Utilizes centrifugal force to fling the airflow outward along the blades.
3. Mixed-flow: Combines the two airflow patterns mentioned above.
Rotational speed refers to the rate at which a fan rotates, typically measured in the number of revolutions per minute, abbreviated as rpm. The rotational speed is influenced by factors such as the number of windings in the electromechanical coil, wire diameter, outer and inner diameters of the fan blade impeller, blade shape, and the type of bearing used. As the rotational speed increases, the airflow volume also increases accordingly.
The magnitude of the rotational speed to some extent reflects the airflow volume. Under constant conditions, the higher the rotational speed, the greater the noise and vibration will be. Therefore, provided that the airflow volume meets the cooling requirements, it is advisable to use fans with lower rotational speeds whenever possible. Typical rotational speed ranges (taking DC axial-flow fans as an example):
- 2510 fan: 7,000–12,000 rpm;
- 3010 fan: 5,000–9,000 rpm;
- 4010 fan: 5,000–7,000 rpm;
- 5010 fan: 3,500–5,000 rpm;
- 6025 fan: 2,600–4,500 rpm;
- 7025 fan: 2,400–3,600 rpm;
- 8025 fan: 2,000–3,500 rpm;
- 9225 fan: 1,600–3,100 rpm;
- 12025 fan: 1,500–2,500 rpm;
- 12038 fan: 2,000–3,200 rpm.
The fan speed can be tested during computer startup via the BIOS, or through monitoring software provided by the motherboard itself; it can also be tested using a tachometer.
